Trusted Traveler Programs

TSA PreCheck® and Global Entry are both Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Trusted Traveler Programs. TSA PreCheck® provides expedited security screening benefits for flights departing from U.S. Airports. Global Entry provides expedited U.S. customs screening for international air travelers when entering the United States. Global Entry members also receive TSA PreCheck® benefits as part of their membership.

If you plan to fly Domestically ONLY (inside the United States) TSA PreCheck® is the best trusted traveler program for you.

If you plan to fly Internationally (outside of the United States) Global Entry® is the best trusted traveler program for you. (hint: if you THINK you may travel internationally, it’s better to go ahead and get Global Entry because it’s only $22 more dollars and also includes TSA PreCheck)

Memberships are good for 5 Years for both programs.

TSA PreCheck® How it Works

1. Apply Online
The TSA has partnered with IDEMIA to provide a more streamlined enrollment for TSA PreCheck. Visit the IDEMIA website to start a new enrollment or renew your TSA PreCheck.

2. Visit an enrollment location
Attend a 10-minute appointment at your chosen provider that includes fingerprinting, document and photo capture, and payment. Put in your zip code and find your closest Enrollment Center.
(in Alabama, there are centers in Hoover, Trussville, Decatur and Montgomery)

3. Enjoy TSA PreCheck®
Once approved, add your Known Traveler Number (KTN) to your airline reservations to start saving time in screening and enjoying your benefits for 5 years. And when it’s time to renew, the process is easy and most applications can be completed entirely online in as little as 5 minutes.

Global Entry®: $100

Less Waiting, Fewer Headaches, More Time, Better Experience

Use the express line at customs and immigration when flying internationally, which can save you time and a potential headache after a long trip. As an added bonus, enjoy the benefits of TSA PreCheck when flying domestically as well.

How it Works

1. Apply Online: Submit the online application.

2. Enroll
Applicants who are conditionally approved can complete their interviews by scheduling an appointment at an Enrollment Center or upon arrival into the United States at an Enrollment on Arrival (EoA) location.

If you are flying internationally into the US within the next 6 months we encourage you to complete your Global Entry enrollment at an Enrollment on Arrival (EoA) location as an alternative to scheduling an interview at an Enrollment Center. Find a Global Entry EoA Location

3. Membership
Once accepted, your membership will last for 5 years.

Global Entry program members can use Global Entry Customs Kiosks at more than 75 airports when returning to the U.S. from travel abroad.

For Global Entry, you complete an application online. Once it’s approved, you set up an in-person screening at an enrollment center. You may not be able to get an appointment quickly, so PLAN AHEAD way before international travel.

~~CLEAR® is a privately owned company that uses biometrics to verify your identity. It saves you time by scanning your eyes and fingerprints vs. having to show your ID to TSA.
CLEAR costs $189 and is good for 1 year. You can add family members for $99 each.

You can use CLEAR alone to avoid the TSA ID line, but you’d still need TSA PreCheck or Global Entry to avoid taking your shoes off and items out of your bags.

You can combine CLEAR with TSA PreCheck and/or Global Entry for the fastest experience, but you really need to be an avid air traveler to reap the benefits of having both due to CLEAR’s higher cost per year.

CLEAR’s Free Reserve program allows you to reserve a spot in line for free at participating airports before you arrive.
