Detailed Itinerary of
“Tower of London” Land Tour
Explore both cosmopolitan London and the deeply fascinating corner or Britain, the beautiful country of Kent. Admiring a variety of popular attractions such as Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and the Garden of England.
DAY 1
Fly into London Heathrow or London Gatwick Airport. Here you will be met and transferred to The Radisson Blu Edwardian Grafton Hotel. Although every effort will be made to have your room available prior to the 3:00pm check in, it cannot be guaranteed.
Note: Once you have gone through Customs and Immigration you will collect your luggage at the carousel, walk through the “nothing to declare” channel and then exit into the arrivals hall where your driver will be waiting with a sign with the NCL logo. Should you not be able to locate your driver within a few minutes, as he may be assisting other guests, please contact the local agent via the phone number listed in your final cruise documents.
The remainder of the day and meals are on your own, after which you will overnight at the hotel.
DAY 2
London with Tower of London, Crown Jewels, lunch & guided tour
London, a city that inspires and amazes. A capital that basks is in its rich history where around every corner there is something new, yet something very familiar. These iconic places seem like old friends, be it from novels or film, Peter Pan to Oliver Twist, from the paintings of Monet to the poetry of Wordsworth. We take you on a tour of this majestic city, fully guided by a London expert.
And what better way to start this day of discovery than with a visit to the historic Tower of London.
There is plenty of time to explore this ancient fortress, see the site of executions at the scaffold, visit the Beauchamp Tower adorned with the graffiti of prisoners over 500 years ago. Climb the thousand-year-old White Tower and learn the gruesome history of the Bloody Tower.
View the famous Crown Jewels, marvel at the Imperial State Crown and gaze in wonder at the Cullinan diamond, the largest clear-cut diamond in the world. An amazing collection of intricate jewelry and precious metals which are still in use today for coronations and special events.
It’s then time for a cruise on the River Thames as you pass by the iconic Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Palace of Westminster followed by a superb 2 course lunch in a London restaurant.
In the afternoon enjoy a guided tour of the city, starting from Parliament and Westminster Abbey, peer along Downing Street, home of the British Prime Minister, circle around Trafalgar Square, see vibrant Piccadilly Circus and the opulent Albert Memorial and view the city’s famous museums such as the Victoria and Albert and the Science Museum. Head into Knightsbridge to drive by Harrods and then take a short walk for a photo stop outside Buckingham Palace before returning to your hotel at the end of this entertaining and rewarding day.
Upon returning to your hotel, the evening is at spent at your leisure.
DAY 3
Kent, the Garden of England, Dover Castle, Country pub lunch and Wine Tasting
Travel to a surprisingly unique and deeply fascinating corner of Britain, the beautiful county of Kent, with its lush green landscape, bountiful orchards, fruit markets and bustling vegetable farms it is known, quite rightly, as The Garden of England.
But Kent is not just a collection of charming villages and narrow country lanes, its proximity to the continent has made it both a rewarding and dangerous place to be. Whether it be Roman or Norman invaders, the arrival of Christianity through St Augustine, or French Huguenot refugees escaping persecution, the county of Kent has seen it all.
More recently, though, it was in the firing line from Luftwaffe during World War Two, specifically the Battle of Britain in 1940. The sky over the county echoed to the sound of dogfights between the Royal Air Force and the enemy.
We pay a visit to the Battle of Britain memorial that overlooks the famous White Cliffs of the South Coast. From here, as we look out to the French coast, we make the short journey to Dover Castle, the largest castle in England. Visit the 2,000-year-old Roman lighthouse, Henry II’s magnificent 12th century stone keep and explore the extensive range of tunnels dating from the Napoleonic Wars and World War Two.
We depart the coast and begin our village tour. First stop is a country pub for a 2-course lunch. Enjoy local produce with an English ale! Then let us explore the twisting country lanes, villages of thatched cottages and flintstone churches which date back a thousand years. See the hop fields, grown to flavour beer, and the Oast Houses where hops were dried in kilns to preserve them.
Let us pause in the delightful village of Chilham with its timber framed cottages huddled below the stately Manor House at the head of the old square. Visit the church and see the ancient Yew tree which took root way back in 690AD. Enjoy a drive into the heart of the region, through fields of market produce, tomatoes, onions, orchards of apples and the ever-present hop fields.
To finish off the day, and to show how the region’s mild climate helps grow the varied produce that finds its way to the markets of London, we visit an award-winning vineyard. Learn the processes and methods to transform fruit into great wines, followed by time for tasting, before we head back to London.
The remainder of the evening is at your leisure.
DAY 4
After breakfast, at 8:45am, you will begin your journey to the ship via one of the wonders of the world and the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe ‘Stonehenge’. Entry to the site is included but the tour is self guided.
You will also be accompanied from the hotel by a professional tour guide, who will enlighten & entertain you with history of the local area as you travel.
Please be in the lobby 15 minutes prior to departure, having settled any incidentals, where you will be met by a representative. Please note timings are variable depending on availability at Stonehenge.
CRUISE PORTS:
Brussels / Bruges (Zeebrugge), Belgium
The ultimate European city, Brussels has tons of museums, fountains, gardens and great shopping. Stroll the Old Town area to see St. Hubert Arcades and its shops, as well as Butchers’ Street with its plethora of restaurants and cafes and the Grand Place with its Baroque guild houses.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Affectionately known as the “Venice of the North,” Amsterdam is actually situated below sea level and built entirely on stakes driven into the ground. The Anne Frank House, The Hague and a Delft Blue Pottery Factory are but a few of the sights that await your arrival.
Bergen, Norway
View this lovely and charming Norwegian city from your cruise ship and you’ll see how the city is nestled between seven mountains, seven fjords and the North Sea. The Norwegian King resided here, and many historical events took place in this busy port. These events come alive when you amble down the old streets of Bryggen, past picturesque, wooden buildings and the Romanesque-style St. Mary’s church.
Geiranger, Norway
A quaint village nestled in a valley in western Norway, Geiranger grants a respite to remember. Visitors come from all over to explore the fjord and its gorgeous views of nearby waterfalls, mountainscapes and charming farms.
Ålesund, Norway
One of Norway’s most beautiful towns, renowned for its Jugend-style architecture and art nouveau style. Cruise visitors will immediately notice Ålesund’s unique layout, as it is built on islands extending to the sea, and offers scenic views of fjords and the Sunnmore Alps. Ålesund is the fishing capital of Norway.
Isafjordur, Iceland
As the largest town in Iceland’s remote Westfjords’s region, Ísafjörður is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Boasting an enchanting fjord ideal for watersports and a mountainous landscape brimming with opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding and more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Originally a church site and a 16th century trading post, the town of Ísafjörður is home to wonderful museums and historic sites for those wishing to learn about the region’s rich heritage and local culture.
Akureyri, Iceland
Nestled along the shores of one of the most breathtaking fjords in Iceland, Akureyri is the nation’s second largest urban area and a center of Icelandic folk culture. Visit the museums, hike along the extraordinary vistas or explore the botanical gardens. Shop in one of the charming boutiques and then catch a glimpse of the most northerly 18-hole golf course in the world. After you’ve worked up an appetite, feast on some Nordic specialties like smoked lamb and fresh fish and then indulge in an Icelandic fried pastry.
Reykjavik, Iceland
There’s a good reason that Iceland is considered a photographer’s dream destination. Its terrain is visually stunning, offering views of lava flows, hot springs, unspoiled nature – and colorful, fascinating cities like Reykjavik. The world’s most northerly capital brings together quaint villages, exciting museums, a flourishing music scene and restaurants that rival Europe’s finest.
